Suffolk Wave

I have used this program a lot to help patrons and now we can download onto ipod! Yay! I just downloaded A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar and Anna Fields. I didn't know that this was a book. I am so excited to listen to this; the movie was excellent!

Summary

Okay, well, I have to admit I was a little leery of this project in the beginning, but I was enticed with getting to run out of the house in my jeans and well, with a baby at home, this was quite a prize. As I went through it, some of the tasks were a little confusing and I don't know if I will use some of them again, such as Twitter. However, many of the things I learned to use, I don't know how I lived without them before, like the RSS feeds. I really learned a lot and I am happy to have had the push I needed to get up to speed in the web world. Thanks a bunch to everyone who put so much time and effort into this program, I think that it really turned out great!

Craigslist

I have mixed feelings about craigslist, sometimes you can get a great deal, and other times you can get ripped off. I found a posting for an I Pod touch, not sure if it is a deal or not, but here it is http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/ele/1229033892.html.

Google Docs

This is an interesting tool. We are now using it for the schedules in addition to the paper copies and I think this is great because it allows us to make changes as needed. Another great thing about this is that the supervisor can see who made the changes so that there is no confusion. I think that there is still a place for Microsoft Office, because sometimes there are tools on there that are not available on Google Docs. Overall, I think that Google Docs is terrific!

Wiki

I really enjoy wiki's. I think that they are a great tool for the workplace because everyone can contribute, so you are able to get everyone's knowledge of a subject. I really liked the PALS site, it gave a lot of information about the programs that we use, I felt that it was very comprehensive. The St. Joseph's site, which included bibliographies was very interesting. I think that is a great way to do the bibliographies, because then you can get all of the librarians perspective's on the books, which provides a greater range of material. I think that by using wiki's to do the bibliographies and other such projects, we could better serve the community, because the public would be exposed to a wider variety of preferences and tastes.

New Feeds

So, this one was a little confusing. Bloglines seemed to me like the Google of blogs. I found that it gave too many hits, and the narrowing tools were not very helpful. Technorati, I really enjoyed, I thought that this one was much easier to use. Some of the tools that I found useful were, "Top 100 Blogs" and the way that you could search for blogs by subject, this provided for a much more direct search. Syndic8 gave a lot of information that I am not familiar with. I think that this site is not as user-friendly; it is more for the experienced blogger. Some terms that I didn't understand were, "Toolkit", "Poll Status" and "Pings" I've heard these words before, but I don't really know what they mean. Google reader is user-friendly this one is probably the easiest to use, but sometimes when I type in a search I don't find what I am looking for, but on other sites, it comes right up, so that is a bit frustrating. Maybe I like this one the best because I am familiar with it, I'll have to keep checking back with the other ones, maybe they'll get easier over time.

MMSCL RSS Feeds

I think that the RSS feeds are a great tool for our patrons to get the information they are most interested in, which will provide for a better and more efficient service. I am always checking the new music for adults and now all I will get e-mails alerting me to the new material. I also subscribed to the new DVD's on google reader. I hope that patrons do use the new tools that we have available to their fullest potential so that they may benefit as much as they can.

RSS Feeds

Can I just say that I LOVE RSS feeds! This is such a great way to keep up to date on the things I want to know. I subscribed to CNN.com, Easting Well Recipes and People.com. I learned a lot about the health care reform that President Obama is proposing. The link below will lead you to the article that I found on the CNN.com feed.

Flikr

I myself am more of a Photobucket gal. I think that Flikr has more public access than Photobucket does, I am not certain about that seeing as I have never really ventured outside my own albums on Photobucket. I do like Flikr though, I just prefer the privacy of Photobucket.

You Tube

I love You Tube! When I was living in Georgia, we had no cable, but I had my laptop and You Tube kept me busy for hours! I think there is a lot of quality video footage on there. If you are looking for something to make you laugh you can definitely find it and if you are looking for how to make a diaper cake, you can find that too! It's just great. The video I chose, I am sure that everyone has seen it already, but it chokes me up every time that I watch it.

Twitter

I just realized that I never blogged about Twitter! My tweet was about the book The Host. I am undecided about Twitter. I feel like if I wanted to send out a short message to everyone, I could just send out a blanket text and that would reach all of the contacts in my phone, so I don't really see the need for Twitter. However, I have been hearing about it a lot on TV lately, and I think that it would be interesting to read tweets from someone who was attending an event, because then you could get the inside scoop as it was happening. So, I guess there are good and bad points about it.

Library Thing

Here are my thoughts on Library Thing. I think that it is a great resource for people who work in a library or are very involved in their library and have a very large book collection. However, for everyone else, I don't really see a need for it. I do think that the tags make it easier for people who do not know subject headings to find what they are looking for. I really like it though and I can't wait to go home and complete my catalog. If anyone knows how I am about my CDs, DVDs and books, I am a little obsessed about organization, and now I don't have to be! Yay for me!! :oD

Delicious

I found this web site to be interesting. It was a little confusing at first, but after I explored it a little bit, I found it to be very useful. I hate when I can't remember a web site address! This is a tool so that I don't have a hundred pieces of scrap paper with random web addresses written on them! I really enjoyed it, and I may even sign myself up!

Myspace vs. Facebook

I have an account with both, myspace and facebook, when I first got my facebook account I liked myspace because I was used to it, but now that I got the hang of facebook I like it much better! The library's facebook account has 116 fans and there are other library's on there. I think the teen myspace page really appeals to kids that age and is a great tool for connecting them with the library. I really enjoyed the slideshow pictures and I thought that it was great that you can search the catalog right from the myspace page. All in all, like I said, I enjoy facebook more.
